More info

Work for bass clarinet written to Harry Sparnaay and dedicated to my friend José Luis García del Busto. The title referring to fossils has a particular appeal to me not related to these persons. The bass clarinet is a relatively modern instrument that has an archaic sonority, from an ancient time, specially in its "more contemporary" registers. Trilobites have always been very interesting to me. If I had been younger, I certainly should be only interested in dinousaurs, but I have to declare that I have always been much more interested in trilobites than in dinousaurs; maybe because I could have a trilobite on my children's palm, that stone witness of a time when the lack of predators allowed this species to inhabit the sea. Anyway, this work has three movements, with similar timing. First and third work on intervals through a different approach. They alternate two Indian scales: Sindhura (mode in D) and Marva, but not relating them to an exotic raga reference. The second movement uses a different material referring to a past time reminding me about a personal experience. I could have entitled the work "sonatina", but this term sounds more archaic than trilobites…
